Watch for Fake News

Both the Daily Telegraph and Daily Mail report there have been "complaints", (note plural), issued to York Minster advocating the removal of a statue of a Roman Emperor from outside the building. York Minster however states they have received "no such complaints".

It is a prime example of the right in politics desperately attempting to create a culture war. To be able to say "PC gone mad". To make us all feel like we are under siege from "them", "they", "the other". Boris Johnson's continuous referrals to Winston Churchill's statue in Westminster, saying it must be defended, is yet another example, because there are no serious people asking for it to be removed. It's basically confected. It's entirely designed to deflect and make us feel angry.

Of course if you scour the country enough you might find a Marxist student or a maverick academic asking for it to be removed, but you could do that for anything.

Why does this relate to South West Wiltshire?

Fake news and propaganda are a threat to us all because it debases our entire political system. It seeps into local politics just as much as it does the national debate. It is hard to counter because a three word sound-bite is easier to digest than a lengthy explanation stating why that sound-bite is an untruth.

Fake news has already damaged the UK, including South West Wiltshire, which is why fact-checking, and even fact-checking the supposed "impartial" fact checkers, because even some of those are fake, is so important.
