Solution in sight: Trowbridge Town Park public toilets

The controversial and long running saga of the Trowbridge Town Park public toilets should be on its way to being resolved at next weeks town council meeting.

The provision of the toilets has been a cause of controversy all year and Trowbridge Town Council set-up a cross party working party to discuss possible options.

Now the cross party working group, consisting of conservatives, Lib Dems and independent conservatives, Cllrs Dennis Drewett, Andrew Bryant and Diana King, have come up with a series of recommendation for the future of facilities in the Park.

A report to the Town Council's Policy and Resources committee on Tuesday next week says: "Following consideration over a number of weeks and a series of meetings, informed by the results of the survey, the Group recognises that the previous facilities which were demolished were not fit for purpose, were poorly located and failed to provide a full range of facilities.

The recommendations to the Policy and Resources committee will then need to be discussed by full council at their next meeting on Tuesday September 15, and the councillors have put four ways to go forward.

The first is that 'in the short term', a public toilet facility is developed within the Civic Centre building in St Stephen's Place and would be adjacent to the Avenue entrance with an new external door and conversion of the existing disabled toilet on the ground floor.

They also suggest 'in the medium term, the council works with Wiltshire Council to secure funding from the Future High Streets Fund and other partnership funding to provide a new public toilet facility in the Park as part of a multi-use Pavilion'.

The group also recommends 'A Community Toilet Scheme involving those commercial establishments which are willing to offer their own facilities to the public without a fee'.

And finally, they recommend 'A comprehensive signage system for the town centre, potentially as part of the Future High Streets Fund, so that the public can more easily identify the locations of a range of facilities, including public toilets, across the town.'

The Policy and Resources Committee virtual meeting takes place at 7pm on Tuesday 1st September and details to participate are available on request to the Town Council.
