Invest in our Defence spending now, not in the future

1 Jul 2022

I was pleased to see yesterday's pledge to increase defence spending by 2.5% of GDP, however await to see the reality of this promise. The reality of the past few years is that to often promises for funding or manifesto promises have later been discarded by Johnson's Government.

Research by the Liberal Democrats shows that:

  • Defence spending faces real-terms cuts of £1.7 billion over the next three years, new research commissioned by the Liberals Democrats has revealed.
  • The House of Commons Library analysis forecasts that Ministry of Defence day-to-day spending will be eroded by inflation, leading to a 5.5% real-terms cut by 2024/25.
  • The Conservatives have admitted they are on course to break a manifesto commitment to increase the defence budget in line with inflation. This marks yet another broken promise by Boris Johnson.

A promise for funding to increase by the end of the decade, when it is increasingly probable that this Government won't even be in power, is not the same as recognition that funding is needed now.

At this dark moment, we should be investing in defence, not neglecting our armed forces. Liberal Democrats will reverse these misguided cuts and back our troops. #ArmedForces
