14 Jul 2022

With temperatures set to rise this weekend and into next week (16 -19 July 2022), the Met Office has issued an Amber extreme heat alert.

This means the affect of the heat is not just limited to those most vulnerable to extreme heat. Temperatures could peak in excess of 36C, with Monday and Tuesday (18 and 19 July 2022) expected to be particularly hot.

Our advice for residents is:

  • Regularly check the Met Office website for the latest updates - Weather and climate change - Met Office
  • To look out for those who may struggle to keep themselves cool and hydrated, particularly older and more vulnerable people.
  • Stay cool indoors and close curtains on rooms directly in the sunlight
  • Drink plenty of fluids and avoid excess alcohol.
  • Never leave anyone in a closed, parked vehicle, especially infants, young children or animals.
  • Try to keep out of the sun between 11am to 3pm, when the UV rays are strongest.
  • Walk in the shade, apply sunscreen and wear a hat, if you have to go out in the heat.
  • Avoid physical exertion in the hottest parts of the day.
  • If you need to travel by road or rail please prepare for the journey by bringing plenty of water - there could be disruption to travel networks·
  • If you decide to cool off in open water please take care and follow local safety advice
