Former Deputy become Wiltshire Council Leader
The new leader of Wiltshire Council has been announced. Richard Clewer will take on the role, having previously served as deputy leader.
Cllr Clewer has been named as the new leader of Wiltshire Conservatives, and as the council is a Conservative majority, this effectively means he will also be the new leader of Wiltshire Council. Cllr Clewer has been a Wiltshire Councillor since the creation of Wiltshire Council in 2009 and was a Salisbury District Councillor before that.
Deputy leader has been announced as Laura Mayes. A Conservative councillor for Roundway (near Devizes) since 2009, Laura was also cabinet member for children, education and skills.
Turnout for the Election
Terence Herbert, Wiltshire Council Chief Executive and Returning Officer for Wiltshire, said: "I'd like to congratulate all the elected Wiltshire Council members, both new and returning, for their successes today. We look forward to working with all 98 elected members in the coming years.
"This election has been a huge undertaking for all our staff, who have had to manage the whole process in a safe and COVID-secure way, I'd like to thank them for all their hard work.
"The hard work continues though, and tomorrow we will count the city, town and parish ballots in our three count centres in Trowbridge, Salisbury and Chippenham, and then on Monday we will count the votes for the Wiltshire and Swindon Police and Crime Commissioner in Salisbury."
This election saw a turnout of 40.53%, which is a slight increase on the 2017 turnout of 39.6%. The final electorate number in the Wiltshire Council area was 381,454, with 70,733 registered postal voters.
