Reserves looted and environmental improvements dumped as WC budgets go awry

A budget monitoring report prepared for the WC 'cabinet' meeting on October 18th reveals that despite throwing the Chief Executive overboard the WC hot air balloon is still plummeting to the ground. The next object to be ejected will be the proposed environmental improvements which would've helped avoid future fines for excessive CO2 emissions. Half a million pounds will also have to be raided from the reserves.

The main areas where there have been overspends or reductions in projected income are:

Adult Care (£1.3million)

Car Parking Charges (£1.1million)

Mistakes in planning new waste collections (£450,000)

Leisure centres (£265,000)

Legal fees (£600,000)

The total overspend is £2.859 million. The balance has been helped by a £400,000 tax rebate. Also a projected overspend of £439,000 on looked after children and young people has been brought down to just £34,000 by the axing of services. The proposal to defer environmental improvements into the future would save £180,000 in this financial year, though the longer term costs could be considerable.
