Could you get business rate relief?

October 15, 2011 8:02 AM

moneyAll businesses have to pay Non-Domestic Rates (NDR). Although councils collect the rate the money is all snaffled by central government, which then gives some of it back to local councils. However there is a system of rate relief, partly obligatory (funded by government), and partly discretionary (funded by local councils, who can decide how much relief to give).

Here's Wiltshire's policy. If you think you qualify and aren't getting relief at the moment contact your local councillor for information on how to apply. M = mandatory and D = discretionary.

Charities and voluntary organisations - 80% (M), + up to 20% (D).

Community Amateur Sports Clubs and Leisure Trusts - up to 100% (D).

Other sports clubs - up to 50% (D) if eligible for small business rate relief.

Charity shops - 80% (M).

Other Charitable and Community Organisations - A wide range of organisations (village halls, youth organisations, museums, local social welfare and cultural organisations, nursery schools etc) got varying percentages of relief from the old district councils. These will have to re-apply for their rate relief to WC by January.

Rural Businesses - In settlements with a population of less than 3000, post offices and food shops with a rateable value of less than £8,500, the only pub, or the only petrol filling station. 50% (M) + up to 50% (D).

Rural Post Offices not qualifying for mandatory relief - 50% (D).

Other Rural businesses with rateable values under £16,500 - up to 50% (D)

Other statutory rebates such as Small Business Rate, and Partial Occupation reliefs, can be applied for if appropriate.

Mandatory rebates will be processed by council officers, whilst a panel will meet monthly to decide the discretionary bids. There will be an appeal system for those who get refused by the panel.
