The new Brantano store in Trowbridge
Next, New Look and international footwear retailer Brantano were the first retailers to take space at Shires Gateway in Trowbridge, and now Boots chemists and Argos are joining them.
The Argos store is now open, and Boots are due to open next Wednesday (Nov 10).
Parkridge Developments began work on the site in May 2008 after being granted planning consent in March of that year. Shires Gateway provides much needed retail opportunities with a new pedestrian street and public courtyard linking Bythesea Road and Stallard Street, where eventually there could be boutique shops and cafes on the ground level and offices and apartments above.
Brantano opened their shop in August 2009 and 'New Look' and 'Next' soon followed.

Trowbridge Councillor Helen Osborn has raised with Wiltshire Council the difficulty faced by pedestrians attempting to cross Bythesea Road to get at the new shops. "A number of local people have complained to me regarding the dangerous and confused pedestrian crossings," she said. "There is a need for a total re-think of the arrangements."
Replying for the council Conservative Transport supremo Dick Tonge said, "There are presently two controlled pedestrian crossings along the new shopping frontage closely spaced approximately 100m apart. These crossings are well used although it is recognised that pedestrians opt to cross Bythesea Road at many other points. Such activity is a byproduct of Bythesea Road becoming a shopping destination, but has not prompted the need for any significant alterations or additions. There are no recorded injury accidents along that stretch of road which are attributable to those movements."
