An application to make alterations to a listed building in Teffont Evias has been refused by councillors on the Salisbury Area Planning Committee.
Evias cottage is one of a group of attached cottages which are grade II listed and situated within the Teffont Evias Conservation Area. The cottage is attached at right angles to a pair of cottages to the north, and has its main elevation and outlook facing onto its sole garden area to the south.
The site is also within a Special Restraint Area, the Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, and Flood Risk Zone 3 (i.e. land assessed as having a 1 in 100 or greater annual probability of flooding).
The proposal was to erect a single storey extension to the south-east corner of the dwelling. This would have taken the form of a pitched roofed outbuilding linked to the dwelling by a flat roofed extension.
The WC conservation officer objected, as did Salisbury civic society, the local parish council, and a number of nearby residents.
The planners concluded that the proposed extension would fail to respect the character of the group of listed buildings and would not preserve the character of the conservation area or Special Restraint Area.

A similar application for 'Laurels' in the High Street in Hindon was recommended for refusal by officers. This is also a grade II listed dwelling, sited with its end onto the Hindon High Street.
It is proposed to demolish an existing conservatory situated on the garden-facing end of the dwelling, and to replace it with a single storey extension of a larger footprint.
The conservation officer objects due to the "excessive scale of the extension which would detract from the central focus of the cottage due to its elongated form." However in this case there are no other objections and in fact the parish council is in support.
