Plasterboard can now be recycled at seven household recycling centres (HRCs)in Wiltshire.
New rules mean we cannot put plasterboard in the general waste bin at the HRCs.
Plasterboard and other gypsum-based products produce toxic gases when they are buried with biodegradable waste.
The HRCs in Wiltshire which can now take plasterboard are Amesbury, Devizes, Honeyball (Calne), Melksham, Salisbury, Stanton St Quintin (Chippenham) and Warminster. Separate containers will be in place for people to deposit waste plasterboard. The other three HRCs will not be able to accept plasterboard and it cannot be put in the general waste container.
People should also not put plasterboard in their household waste bin. If bins are found to contain plasterboard the council will not empty them. Plasterboard will not be collected as part of bulky household waste collections.
The tougher rules follow research by the Environment Agency which shows that putting plasterboard in landfill with biodegradable waste produces the smelly and poisonous gas hydrogen sulphide. Instead the plasterboard must be treated and buried separately. The Environment Agency is responsible for enforcing rules on waste disposal and can bring court proceedings against individuals or local authorities breaking these rules.
One option for people who have whole plasterboards left over from their DIY is to advertise it on the Freecycle network. This internet-based community service lets people offer items for free for collection. Find out more at www.freecycle.org.uk
