Westbury pool
Wiltshire's Conservative 'cabinet' has back-tracked on its proposal to close all the swimming pools in West Wiltshire.
The original plan was to build new leisure 'campuses' in Trowbridge, Melksham and Warminster to replace the existing facilities, with Westbury and Bradford pools closing unless someone else was prepared to take them on.
The ambition is still to build the leisure campuses, but as that would happen within the ill-fated Workplace Transformation Programme the original timescales may have to be extended.
The council has adopted a more reasonable approach to facilities in Bradford and Westbury, saying they can remain the responsibility of the Council until the future management arrangements are determined. So the threat of closure is deferred but not ended. The same applies to Tisbury pool.
The compromise follows strong campaigns run by local councillors in Westbury and Bradford.
In another change of heart indoor bowls could remain in Melksham - the original proposal was to move the bowlers to Leighton Sports Centre.
The council will also give £400,000 to Melksham Gymnastics Centre to enable an extension to the facility.
